I offer you and your family the seamless support, before leaving and on arrival, that I needed 30 years ago when I made my own transition from the US to Germany.
I was lost and overwhelmed.
Trying to master daily to-dos — filing for residency, getting stamps, seals, and permits at the city Rathaus (registrar’s office), flat- and job-hunting, and maneuvering unfamiliar territory by bicycle and public transportation to get to appointments was arduous. Despite years of studying the language, my tongue became a knot. My eyes bored holes in the ceiling many a night. A gradual stretch (eons later!), and I was able to bridge the chasm between expat confusion and cultural integration.
It could have been much more manageable, even painless, had I had a trustworthy, resourceful “someone” to show me the ropes and ease the way. Some 30 years later, I am just that person I had wished for.
Having a soft place to land in a new country is invaluable. Today, the least I can do is encourage you to enable yourself and your children the experience of visiting and living between castles, palaces, and churches. The best I can do is walk the first steps with you and celebrate the doors you open as you embrace your new life here.
